Importance of Forests

Importance of Forests: Forests are advantageous for environment. They influence climate, reduce soil erosion, regulate stream flow, provide raw material for industries and livelihood for many, etc. They control wind force and temperature and cause rainfall. They also provide shelter to various animal species.

Medicinal Plants : From ancient times. India is known for its herbs and splces Around 2.000 plants have been described in Ayurveda and atleast 500 are in regular use. The World Conservation Union's Rec List has named 352 medicinal plants of which 52 are critically threatened and 49 endangered. Some commonly used mrediciral plantsin India alongwith their use are given below

Sarpagandha It is used to trea: blood pressure and found only in India

Jamun Its juce from ripe fruit is used to prepare vinegar which is carminative and diuretic and has cigestive properties The powder of the seed is used for controlling diabetes.

Arjun The fresh juice of leaves is a cure for earache. It is alsc used to regulate blood pressure

Babool Leaves are used as a cure for eye sores. Its gum is used as a tonic,

Neem It has high anti-biotic and arti-bacterial properties

Tulsi Plant It is used to cure cough ard cold.

Kachnar It is used to cure asthma and ulcers. The buds and roots are good for digestive problems
